ToolsOur Gandhi, Mandelaplease step upOur country's democracy demands the dedication of a nation to nurture it, the duty of its people to develop it, the courage of its citizens to defend it, and the maturity of its society to sacrifice to build it. Leadership is nothing more than an empty throne without the people's support and positive actions. Fifty years of independence have shaped a culture of dependence, and two generations of addiction to dependency on government handouts. The plantation economy we have embraced exacts its demise mercilessly. When will our citizenry stand by "Discipline, Tolerance, and Production" and "Together we aspire, Together we achieve"? We the people cannot blame the political leaders without faulting ourselves. The responsibility of a nation is equally mutual, but significantly more weighted on the people. Change is needed to reverse the curse of a sweet sweet T&T gone wild over decades of degeneration. The modus operandi of the same old, same old, will curse us to our national grave. Change was mandated in 2010, but change demands sacrifice at all levels. Rising to success is in our hands, but will we stand tall, united in effort and purpose to rise, or will this nation fall to its past failures? T&T cries out. She is under siege. After 50 years of extraction, our homeland pleads – that we give back after having taken so much. The fundamental question remains... who will lead by example, and who will follow? In search of Gandhi and Mandela, please arise! Brian Stone via e-mail |
