Our welfare state

The Prime Minister has recently announced further benefits for old age pensioners and those on social assistance as a result of physical challenges.

Several commentators have said she is giving too many handouts and possibly leading the country to become a welfare state. Aren't we already that?

Free medicine, school meals, free tertiary education, school book lease programme, subsidised HDC mortgages, school bus programme and subsidised fuel.

The Minister of Public Utillities estimates the waiver for water and electricity will cost $10 million annually. Simple maths show that it would take 100 years to cover the cost of CHOGM and Summit of the Americas held here in 2009.
