PM, save our environment
THIS is an open letter to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Ma’am, I believe that a vast majority of people here in T&T are suppressed, oppressed, marginalised and literally suffering due to the excessive waste and corruption in Government, the high crime rate, the corrupt and abusive Police Service, the high road fatality figure, the poor health care system and the lack of environmental regulation that allows companies and people to pollute the environment without fear of consequences.
The latter is a very serious concern and a real pet peeve with me because I believe that the environment here in T&T is being severely neglected. We still have dump sites where trash is being buried and burnt. Who knows what this is doing to our water supply, the air we breathe, the soil we plant in. We have no vehicular emission controls (just think what this is doing to our air quality index which we do not even have or measure). We have no national recycling programme and who knows how industrial emissions are being controlled and regulated.
This is a national disgrace for a country that is supposed to be well off. There are many studies showing a strong link between high levels of pollution and diseases. The WHO lists T&T as having one of the highest cancer rates. We have one of the highest carbon outputs per capita, yet our leaders are doing nothing to reduce greenhouse gases and clean up the environment that I’m aware of.
Madam PM, you say that you care and want to serve the people and hear their voices. I do not believe my voice is being heard. So, I want an opportunity to speak with you, please. Thank you.
