Police ignoring lawbreakers
Day in, day out, morning and evening, drivers break the law on the road with impunity especially on the Beetham Highway. On the odd day that there is police on the road, they (the police) often ignore the lawbreakers by turning a blind eye to offences being committed.
One morning quite recently, I saw a derelict-looking truck, without tail lights and with its rear number plate missing, pull on the shoulder, in front of a police vehicle which was driving slowly on the shoulder. The truck driver continued driving until he reached the legal turn off (near NP). The police did nothing.
On a daily basis, vehicles overtake police vehicles at speeds way in excess of the speed limit and they get away with it. Numerous drivers are seen driving with one hand holding cell phones to their ears. How many are charged?
Every day, there are numerous vehicles driving on the shoulder to and from Port of Spain as if it were a legal lane.
Where are the law enforcement officers? I can go on and on.
The law is in place, but must be enforced! I believe that the hefty fine of $1,000 for driving on the shoulder would be a sufficient deterrent if it is applied.
Once a driver is caught and made to pay the fine, it is hardly likely that he/she will repeat the act.
