Put petty courts to better use
THE Chief Justice said that to improve the justice system the use and possession of marijuana should be decriminalised. One wonders if the CJ said what he actually meant, for there are many other minor offences which can also be considered such as praedial larceny and shoplifting, traffic offences and obscene language.
The statement exposed the CJ as being challenged in his duties as the CEO of the judicial system, as many believe the problems are administrative and management, not necessarily confined to the CJ.
It is clear the use of the petty courts is not maximised and hardly does a court in the country, starting daily at 9 a.m. continue in session beyond lunch.
The AG, Minister of Legal Affairs, Minister of Justice, CJ and the DPP together with the other stakeholders should work together, identifying and providing solutions to problem areas within the justice system because the root cause of crime is not being able to punish crime when it occurs .
