In three weeks time our esteemed Minister of Finance will be delivering his budget for 2014.
One of the things occupying the minds of many people is the fate of the unwieldy fuel subsidy which we clearly cannot afford. The sound coming out of the ministry is a gradual reduction of the subsidy.
My take on this issue is that we should do a clinical intervention and remove the subsidy in its entirety, but at the same time give some incentive in the form of a tax rebate to have every vehicle converted to CNG. I sincerely hope that the Minister would seriously consider this proposal, as in one fell swoop we would have removed the crippling subsidy and at the same time move to the use of CNG , a cleaner fuel.
