SWRHA mistake or deliberate ploy?
I draw everyone’s attention to a paid advertisement by the South-West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) for the post of specialist medical officer (SMO) pathology. Under the English scheme of things, a specialist pathologist diploma would be either M.R.C.PATH., DM (PATH) or F.R.C.PATH.
The text of this advertisement goes on to explain the type of specialist required and the officer described is a specialist surgeon who, in our scheme of things, would carry the designation “F.R.C.S.” or “MS”. The “header” of the advertisement seeks a “Pathologist” and the body of the text states a “FRCS” or equivalent is required. The advertisement, as usual, ends with the words: “Unsuitable applications will not be acknowledged”, and a deadline date is given.
If this advertisement is being issued by the Human Resource Depart-
ment of the SWRHA, then there can be three explanations for its confused message: 1) it is a genuine mistake, 2) it is a deliberate confusion, or 3) the mistake is with the press.
If it is a genuine mistake, one would expect someone would be held accountable and remedial action taken. This would result in the appearance of a “new” advertisement with corrections and a new deadline date. If it is a deliberate act, I expect nothing will be done and the confusion will be ignored. If the media made the error—which I strongly doubt—then the course of action as for point 1 above will be taken at no cost to the SWRHA.
I raise this issue out of concern for hidden ex ante “insider” selection. While “selection” in such a situation can be defended by the political correctness of a prior advertise-
ment, accompanied by feigned ignorance of the “error”, such a confusing advertisement can also be deliberate and intended for someone with “inside information” and would spare the SWRHA the trouble of providing embarrassing explanations to “unsuccessful applicants”—whether well-qualified surgeons or pathologists.
Some may see this as pedantic. Others may see this as subtle “corruption” that needs to be stopped. Since I do not think there can be media collusion, I expect this warning would be made
