ToolsSad and bloody 50th year for usThe murder rate in Trinidad continues to be astounding, yet the authorities seem helpless or unable to solve or come up with any ideas to do anything. There is no outcry, no positive action from the Government or the Police Service to deal with this senseless loss of life nearly every day. With that absence of action what are we, the ordinary people who can't afford to live in gated communities or have 24-hour security, to do. I feel so hopeless, ashamed and angry at successive governments, who have done nothing to arrest this scourge since the murder rate began exploding almost 20 years ago. And don't tell me it can't be done. We are too small, only a tiny island, only 1.3 million people, yet our rate of murders surpassed that of America, England and other first world and Caribbean countries, per 100,000. What is there to celebrate come 31st August 2012, when our sons and brothers are killing each other every day? Our country is stained by blood and no one seems to really care. Racquel Putt St James |
