Santa Kamla, try fruits, veggies
Santa Kamla has diabetes. She knows that some 50 per cent of the T&T population is overweight. She knows that 25 per cent of T&T’s children are overweight and presenting with early onset diabetes. She knows that processed white flour, processed cooking oil and bleached white rice play a role in onset of diabetes. Why in the name of Santa does she think that discounting processed white flour, processed cooking oil and bleached white rice is a appropriate Christmas gift for the nation?
This is the information age. The bleaching agent, Alloxan, that helps make processed flour and rice promotes diabetes. Studies show that alloxan, the chemical that makes white flour look “clean” and “beautiful”, destroys the beta cells of the pancreas. Scientists have known of the alloxan-diabetes connection for years; in fact, researchers who are studying diabetes commonly use the chemical to induce the disorder in lab animals. Is Minister of Health Fuad Khan in favour of PM Persad-Bissessar’s gift to the nation? The Health Minister has been telling the nation to cut down on processed white flour, white sugar, sweet drinks and salt.
How is the Prime Minister’s gift helping the work of her Minister of Health? Discounting fruits, vegetables and legumes makes more sense than gifting the nation with sickness by promoting processed food. Nutrient-stripped flour, rice and oil might be the nation’s staples but at what price? A growing epidemic of obesity and diabetes?
