ToolsSet up steelband research centreI write about our continuing inability to provide for the expression of genius when it is not compatible with book learning. The late steelband pioneer Bertie Marshall remained on the margins because of this. I contrast his plight with that of Ellie Manette who at 86 is a renowned professor of steelband music at West Virginia University, in a chair funded by the Smithsonian Institute, and with that of Liam Teague at Illinois University. I call for a research centre devoted to invention in pan that is not necessarily attached to any university, though it would be peopled by engineers and scientists, working along with pan tuners and other pan inventors, and musicians.
