At the intersection of the Eastern Main Road and Mount Hope Link Road, there is a banner on a wall that hails the former and present leaders of our country. I was glad to see that as the 50th anniversary of our country was highlighted, the government thought it fit to recognise the leaders who made their contribution in building our nation.
There were pictures of prime ministers Dr Eric Williams, George Chambers, Patrick Manning, Basdeo Panday and Kamla Persad- Bissessar. The pictures of the presidents of our nation enhanced the wall as well. Each day as I drove past I looked at them. I briefly noticed there was something written at the bottom of each leader, or, really? No.
One day I looked carefully and noted that as far as the prime ministers were concerned, only two were noted as having made contributions to our nation. Both of the UNC fraternity. The others, if I were to interpret the absence of any note, made none.
Why do they have to treat our former leaders like that, especially the founding father, Dr Eric Williams? Are Mr Panday and Mrs Persad-Bissessar the only PMs worthy of recognition? Come on man! Did they have to commend achievements along party line? Are they the only ones who helped build this nation? Be bigger and more mature than that!
Now whenever I see that I think of the American presidents who do not ignore their past leaders, be they Republican or Democrat. They acknowledge the past achievement of their leaders. Why could you not do that especially when you were paying tribute to our leaders as part of our 50th anniversary as a nation!
