I refer to the letter on October 16 headlined, "Where are the Indians?'' written by Savitri Manick. I continue to be shocked and annoyed by how racist this society has become where everything is about what race is disserviced and which race is glorified and what race is... So sick of all this race hogwash.
Ms Manick, about five years ago I thought the same thing when I looked at the images in our print and electronic media, except it was the other way around. I questioned, "why were all the billboards only portraying indians, especially indian women?'' Where were all the medium to dark-skinned models''?
I have seen a slight difference in the media recently. The difference is that the media has started using a few darker skinned Trinidadians and "Afro-Trinidadians'' and so yes the media advertising industry has finally seen the need to balance the biased display of one look (light-skinned, straight hair) that has dominated and still dominates our advertisements. Nevertheless, the industry still has a long way to go to reflect the diversity of our people!
I am not sure where you are viewing these advertisements that you refer to, but I would like to suggest that you take a good look at them again and you will see that the indo-Trinidadians are by a landslide, dominating (among other things) the images in advertisements.
