Swine flu alert
The Health Minister, Dr Fuad Khan, has apologised for the bird/swine flu mix-up. It is now “alleged’’ to be swine flu and we have six confirmed cases, a definite cause for concern.
The country needs to be aware of the various symptoms, for example, sudden high fever. Other things you should know are:
Who are the high-risk groups? Pregnant women, children under two years and persons 65 years and over.
How is the flu spread? Through droplets released in the air from the coughs or sneezes of an infected person. The infected person can spread the virus from one day before symptoms develop to seven days after symptoms appear.
Do I need a vaccine?
People over 65, under five years, pregnant women, people with lung diseases and obese individuals should be vaccinated.
The Health Minister says he is in control, but then he is a politician. We the general public hear your apology, but it’s a good thing you were not performing an amputation instead.
