They came, they saw, they conquered

They came here since 1845

They toiled, they prayed

They worked in the sun and rain

From morning to night

In their hearts and minds

Lord Rama gave them solace

Lakshman gave them courage

Mother Sita gave them a sense of duty

Hanuman gave them protection

They saw this new land

Some had hopes to return home

Others decided to stay

They made this land their home

They worked hard

On the lands where others have tried

They knew what was to be done

They made this place a richer country

From what they earned

They still saved a little

The desire was there

To have a family

They conquered all obstacles

They worked and loved and prayed

They came to their own

They had arrived

A poem about Indian Arrival Day in Trinidad and Tobago. Taken from The Lotus Blooms A Collection of Poems, by the late Ramsundar Persad
