Tolerance the only agenda

It is truly exhausting and perplexing to read articles upon articles where people use God as a basis to express their contempt for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered) people and homosexuality. Religion is being used as a disguising mechanism for persons pushing an agenda of intolerance.

I recently had the displeasure of reading

an article by Pastor Winston Cuffie where he speculated on gay-rights issues. He seemed to deny there is any issue at all facing homosexual persons. He denied the scientific acceptance of homosexuality as natural, when it actually exists in nature, exhibited by numerous subgroups in animal species. He even went on to create a very fallible link between homosexuality and paedophilia. This speaks for the local social attitudes towards LGBT people. It is not impossible to perceive the issues

of discrimination that affect the LGBT

community when persons hold this type

of mentality towards them.

I look forward to the day when Trinbagonians will be able to say this is a State that celebrates individuality. We’re looking for moral authority in our leaders and our religions, but one just needs to look into one’s heart to understand morality. I’d like to think that a person who lives a morally sound life is a person who fashions his actions to affect others positively. The mantra that should be spouted is the tolerance of all people that live peacefully and harm no one else in society.

Can you imagine an existence where you were persecuted for being yourself? One just needs to look at Russia, Uganda and Nigeria right now to gain a perspective.
