Trini red tape a real keep-back
Why do we love bureaucracy so much in T&T?
Last week, I went to St Lucia in a sports fishing boat for a game-fishing tournament.
Prior to my departure, I logged on to a website called “SAILCLEAR” and entered all the particulars of the vessel and the crew.
On entering St Lucia, the Customs there printed four copies of their form and had me sign them, one for Customs, one for Immigration, one for the harbour master and one for me—60 seconds!
On departing, the experience was similar.
On departing Trinidad however, Immigration had us fill in (manually, with carbon paper) four different forms, with yet another for Customs, with a similar process on re-entering. Between Immigration and Customs in Chaguaramas combined, the process took just over an hour each way.
Why can’t we in T&T be progressive, and develop systems and processes that are simple and user friendly?
Remember when the government services actually offered service?
