We've returned to the wild west

It seems we are becoming more and more a brutal and savage society. Recent clips on television and newspaper reports indicate that violence of an advantageous nature is definitely on the rise.

Is this a sign of outright frustration of the people, or simply a regression into the dark ages of brutality and lack of respect for human life (the wild west period)?

I would like to think the latter is the case. Recently publicised footage of a frail, mentally ill man being savagely brutalised by two younger, stronger men is simply outrageous.

The victim was suspected of holding someone else's bank card. But that did not warrant the brutal treatment meted out to the helpless man.

Though the victim offered no resistance, nor did he try to retaliate (which he was unable to do), the two security guards still continued to kick and stomp on him. That showed a total lack of respect for weaker, frail individuals.

It was the duty of the guards to make a citizens' arrest and take the individual to the police, who are the ones authorised to sort out such issues.

The other incident involved some young men beating another one in his vehicle, pulling him out of the car and attempting to stuff the victim into a trunk.

So, have we returned to the wild west or something, where everyone takes the law into his own hands and shoots down the next person who crosses his path?

Perhaps these perpetrators think it has become a lawless society and they will never be brought to justice.

All the same, there is a total loss of respect for human beings and the criminal elements out there are having a feast. The police need to step up their act and the courts need to impose stiffer penalties for breaking the law.

Right now the law is nothing but a joke to the criminal mind.
