We were fooled

I continue to be amazed by the efforts of People's Partnership's supporters to deflect attention away from the gross deceit perpetrated against our seniors. Garvin Nicholas and Anil Roberts tested our patience by floating talk of a misprint, and I see a few brazen souls like letter-writer Bruce McIntosh ("No consistency'', Express, September 1) trying belatedly to suggest that the PNM did the same thing. This is absolutely false and another example of blind supporters failing to hold this Government to account.

The truth is that no other party has ever made such audacious promises to seniors. Not the NAR, not the PNM.  In fact no other party in the Caribbean (not even in Jamaica) has ever made such a grand pledge to seniors.

In January 2009, when a number of pensioners had their payments reduced in error, the critics proclaimed that it would take months to fix the problem. I remember the line minister apologising publicly and in Parliament on behalf of the Social Welfare Division, and taking responsibility for the situation. I remember he hired additional staff to rectify the situation, and those whose payments were reduced were "fixed up" within one week!

Fact: The People's Partnership promised to reduce the pensionable age to 60 years. They have broken their word.

Fact: The People's Partnership promised that all seniors of pensionable age would automatically receive a full pension of $3,000. They have also broken their word on this.

Dear letter writers, please try to do your research. We have a new Government that we must hold to account. When they do wrong, it does us no good to try to rewrite history and suggest the PNM did the same thing.
