Where are the ‘safe settings’ Madam PM?

 Enough is enough!

So says the Prime Minister and that those responsible for the death of little six-year-old Keyana Cumberbatch will be found and brought to justice—but by whom and when?

I can recall in her Universal Children’s Day message in Parliament in 2012. The Prime Minister said “child abuse and neglect offend the basic values of the State”. She went on to say, “we have a responsibility to provide safe settings for at-risk children and facilitate permanent remedies and rehabilitation for children who have already suffered the tragedy and misfortune of neglect and abuse”. But a year into the process where are those safe settings?

And referring to her pet projects, the Children’s Life Fund and the soon-to-be-built Couva Children’s Hospital the PM in her 2013 Universal Children’s Day message said, “I wish to state that my Government is uncompromising in its quest to provide the requisite care and protection for all our nation’s children”. Now the emphasis seems to be more on medical care than it is on safe settings and protection—well I suppose after they are battered and abused they could get good medical care.

I say forget the Couva Children’s Hospital and build a Couva children’s safe house where we can properly house, care and protect abandoned, neglected and abused children and next to that build a Couva prison to house delinquent parents.

Yes Madam Prime Minister, Mr Opposition Leader, et al, enough is enough.

It is time we fully proclaim the Children’s Bill and provide the necessary support services that would protect our nation’s children.
