11 killed since Thursday

THE blood had not yet dried on the scene of a triple murder in Laventille when word got out about another homicide in El Socorro bringing the year's murder toll to 260 and the total number of people killed between Thursday night and yesterday to 11.

In Laventille, tempers were fiery yesterday afternoon because among the three men killed, one of them, Nicholas Roberts, a Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) bus driver was also known as the area's, "saltfish". He was shot dead just as he was about to clear some bush around his mother's home in Picton Road, Laventille.

"Allyuh doh put this man as no gangster", warned residents.

Roberts, 38 was described as a victim, "who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time", said residents.

That morning as he was heading towards his mother's home, he stood in front of a small church known as the Picton Worship Centre when two gunmen ran out a track located off Picton Road and opened fire on him, killing him instantly.

Church was in service at the time. The service continued, however, as a crowd of both police and residents began gathering on the scene.

Prior to shooting Roberts, the killers had moments earlier walked into a house located off the track and murdered two other men, Angus Abbey, 18 and his uncle, Kendall Ali, 30.

Police said these two men moved into the area four months ago and had been living in Diego Martin previously.

Back in November last year, Abbey's father, Mc Donald Abbey, described as a drug dealer by the police, was killed near his Morne Coco Road, Petit Valley home.

Police speculated that Abbey and Ali were hiding out in Laventille as they feared being murdered themselves.

Picton Road residents showed a lot of love for Roberts, however. They didn't even know the names of the two other victims, but they objected to the length of time, Roberts' body lay on the scene.

The police explained that a District Medical Officer (DMO) had arrived and declared Abbey and Ali dead.

The DMO however, looked at the position of Roberts' body as it lay in the centre of the road and said the body was out of his jurisdiction. As a result, another DMO had to be called in and residents began getting agitated.

A woman complained vehemently of the crime in their area and called for more police patrols.

A constable explained that they had regular patrols, but it was up to the people to solve their own problems in their community. She explained, however, that it would be a death sentence for them if they were identified as the one who called the police about criminal activity.

"Listen Mr Officer", she said, "when they point yuh out as an informer, yuh good as dead.

The El Socorro murder victim was Basdeo "Dragon" Babwah, who was arrested back in 2009 for making threatening phone calls to then Tourism Minister Joseph Ross and shooting a man named, Christopher Ali in the leg in July 2009.

Police said yesterday between 1.15 and 1.30 p.m. gunmen walked into Babwah's little hut, located outside the walls of a stationery supplies company known as Media Sales Limited and Toyota at Chanka Trace, El Socorro Extension, and shot him in the head. Babwah died on the scene.

Babwah was the father of three and grandfather of 11 and had been living in the little house for the last eight years. He was a divorcee. One of his sons, who did not want to be named, described Babwah as a helpful person who did not like to see people taken advantage of.

Homicide Bureau officers are continuing investigations into the four murders.
