BETWEEN Friday night and early yesterday morning two murders rocked the Carenage community, pushing the year’s murder toll to 82 up to last night.
At this time last year the murder toll was 81.
Police said at 7.15 p.m. on Friday Clifton “Monie” John, 25, of Benedictine Street, Carenage was liming in front the home of his girlfriend.
As the two spoke they were approached by a gunman who opened fire on John.
John turned and ran and the gunman ran behind him firing several more shots.
He fell, and as he did, the gunman ran away.
A team of officers from both the St James CID led by Insp Henry Dann and the Homicide Bureau visited the scene where they conducted enquiries.
John’s body was moved to the Port of Spain Mortuary.
Police said the motive behind his murder was gang-related.
The Sunday Express was told by a senior officer that John had been questioned previously in relation to several shootings.
Around 4.30 a.m. yesterday morning the second murder occurred.
Police said residents of Gardier Street in Carenage heard several gunshots and the sound of a car speeding off.
As they came out their homes shortly afterward they saw the body of a man lying on the roadway with several gunshots about the body.
When officers arrived on the scene and questioned residents if they knew him but they denied knowing the man.
The man is of African descent, appeared to be in his mid-20s, dark brown in complexion, five feet, five inches tall and was of slim build.
He was wearing a white vest, grey trousers and a black cap.
Anyone with information with regard to the man’s identity is asked to contact the St James Police Station.
Homicide Bureau and St James CID officers are continuing investigations.
