25 held; gun, ammo seized

POLICE officers were able to seize one Taurus pistol and over 12 rounds of ammunition and arrest 25 people for various offences in three separate incidents, Assistant Superintendent Joanne Archie said in the daily police briefing held yesterday.

In the first incident around 1 p.m. on Wednesday three men were liming at Upper Abbe Poujade Street in Carenage when three gunmen approached.

The gunmen opened fire on the trio. An 18-year-old man from Old Santa Cruz Road in San Juan was shot in the incident.

He was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital.

In an attempt to flee the scene one of the gunmen from River Estate Diego Martin stole a white Lexus car at gunpoint.

A report was made to the Western Police Station.

Officers responded, spotted the stolen vehicle and a chase ensued.

After a while the suspect exited the car and began to run.

He was caught by officers and is now assisting them in their investigations.

Several spent shells and one live round of ammunition were recovered.

In the second incident around 1.30 a.m. yesterday officers of the Guard and Emergency Branch were on mobile patrol along the Priority Bus Route in the vicinity of Pashley Street Laventille when they saw a white Nissan Sentra break a traffic light.

The officer pursued and stopped the vehicle.

A search was conducted on the vehicle and one Taurus pistol with 12 rounds of ammunition were found in the vehicle.

The driver, a 20-year-old female from Cunupia and two male occupants one aged 23 from Beetham Gardens and the other a 34-year-old from Caroni were arrested and taken to the Besson Street Police Station.

In the third incident during the period 11 p.m. on Wednesday and 8 a.m. yesterday 25 people were arrested for narcotic offences, outstanding warrants and investigations into reports of shootings and robberies in the Port of Spain area. —JJ
