A Penal nightclub was raided and 16 illegal immigrants arrested by police on Friday night.

Two locals were also detained and are expected to be charged with human trafficking.

They were arrested during an anti-crime exercise in the Southwestern Division. The 12-hour-long exercise included Inspector Anderson Pariman, Senior Superintendent Lewis, Superintendent Joseph, WPC Charles and officers attached to the Southwestern Division Task Force and CID.

Police said 38 people were arrested for various offences.

The officers went to the club at Batchiya Village, Penal, where they detained 15 women and one man from the Dominican Republic. The women were aged 15 to 44.

Police said two local men, ages 27 and 31, who work at the establishment were also detained.

The Immigration Department was contacted and the illegal immigrants were interviewed yesterday.

The 17 people are expected to appear before a Siparia magistrate tomorrow.
