FOUR salvagers were shot yesterday afternoon moments after they boarded a garbage truck as its driver was about to enter the Beetham Highway landfill, located on the outskirts of Port of Spain.
Three of them have been identified as Sherwyn Jordan, Kevon Sampson and Nicholas Pompey, along with a woman identified only as "Garlic Sauce".
The incident occurred at noon and, according to officers of Besson Street CID, the four victims were near the entrance to the landfill when they spotted a heavily-laden garbage truck approaching. The four boarded the truck but as they did so a white-coloured Nissan Almera with four men stopped near the entrance to the landfill and two of its occupants opened fire on the quartet on the back of the truck.
All four were shot several times about their bodies before the car sped off.
Besson Street police were called and conveyed the four victims to Port of Spain General Hospital.
They were in stable condition up to last night.
Solid Waste Management Company Limited (SWMCOL) later stated that the landfill was closed between noon and 3 p.m. yesterday so that the police could have examined the crime scene. And none of the four injured were SWMCOL employees.
A team of officers, including Insp Sahadeo Singh and Cpl Budree, both of Besson Street CID, are continuing investigations.
