5-point plan to improve life in area

MP for Laventille West Nileung Hypolite said yesterday he had five key factors to improve life in Laventille and in the country.

Hypolite said since he took office in 2007, he had advocated a five-point approach for the betterment of people's lives including the areas of sport, education, spirituality, culture and employment.

He said National Security Minister Jack Warner's decision to move armed forces in the area would not be as long lasting and permanent as his approach.

"We need a comprehensive plan that looks at all these areas because there is no way you can get rid of crime totally because it has never happened throughout the world, but if we put programmes in place it will be a much more long-term process that will help in consistently keeping crime down and improving the quality of life of citizens," he said.

Hypolite said that plan must include the East Port of Spain Development Company.

"The people of Laventille can assist in building their houses in a planned community...because it speaks to empowering the people and making sure people have work...by all means you take some money and put it the hands of the East POS Development Company to complement their work," he said.

Hypolite's list of achievements included various road paving projects, retaining walls and drainage projects throughout the constituency.

He itemised the completion of three community centres, at Gonzales, Beetham and Pelican Extension, during the PNM's last term in office.

He also credited NGO Rose Foundation for its work on the refurbishment of the St Barb's Community Centre.

Hypolite said requests for renovation of community centres like Chinapoo and Sogrin Trace had been submitted.

Although nothing has been done over the last two years, he said officials promised to do refurbishment work at schools like Laventille Girls and Boys.

Hypolite services two offices- the main office at 98 Upper Laventille Road, upstairs the health centre in Laventille which he visits every Thursday and the sub-office on the St Joseph Old Road obliquely opposite Trotman street, which he visits every Tuesday and which is open every day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hypolite also does several walkabouts and visits including visits to Mt Coco/Maryland/Chinatown and Eastern Quarry/Pump Trace/ Picton area last Saturday.

"I am regularly in the constituency and I meet with groups, any groups that request my attention. I meet with them, my office manager is always willing to take information and schedule meetings. I also make myself available to get to constituents," he said.
