5 in court for ganja

FIVE people, including two women and a grandfather, are due to reappear in court on September 12 charged with having marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

Sisters-in-law Vashti and Parbatee Ramparas, Rudy Ramparas, Roger Mohammed and grandfather-of-nine Sooknanan Pooran appeared on August 15 before Couva Magistrate Avason Quinlan.

They were charged with having 1,065 grammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, and also possession of nine rounds of ammunition at a house at Balmain, Couva on August 10.

Rudy Ramparas and Mohammed faced an additional charge of having marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, after they were allegedly found with seven and 76 grammes respectively near the Balmain Presbyterian school on the same day.

Charges were laid by Corporal Ali. Quinlan placed each of the women on $70,000 bail.

Rudy Ramparas and Mohammed were placed on $175,000 bail while Sooknanan was granted $100,000 bail.

Defence attorney Selwyn Ramlal represented the women during their court appearance while lawyer Anisha Mohammed represented the men.
