SIX communities will participate in a Divali light-up competition from tonight sponsored by Super Industrial Services Ltd (SIS).
The competition is the brainchild of the People Empowering People, a non-governmental organisation. The communities will engage in a week of Divali celebrations and showcases in what is being described “as an epic Divali showcase of artistry and creativity” by administrator for People Empowering People, Mukesh Babooram.
He said: “Each village will be challenged to light up a major street in their community for an entire week. They will then be judged on their creativity and originality and awarded some attractive prizes. Of course there are no losers since every participating community will be given a prize.”
Corporate communications manager for SIS, Ronald Ramlogan, said: “We have always tried to maintain a relationship with our communities, especially those that surround us. This is an obligation that we do not take lightly. When we were approached by People Empowering People, we could not pass up on the opportunity to get involved with this excellent initiative. It is amazing to think that Central Trinidad will truly experience light over darkness for an entire week. SIS has promised to supply all the lights needed for each of the six communities to create a grand spectacle that will hopefully bring these communities together in a united effort.”
Babooram said Divali seems to have taken a very commercial turn with droves of people heading to the Divali Nagar every year to experience all that Divali and what Indian culture has to offer.
“While there is nothing wrong with this, we felt it was important to take Divali back to the communities and reignite that Divali spirit and vigour that existed many years ago. Community members, families, children and adults will all come together to light up their village and showcase their talents and abilities through cultural shows and showcases for the duration of the week, “ he said.
The communities participating are Three Roads in Freeport, Monroe Road, Chaguanas, Orange Valley, Phoenix Park, Arena, and Balmain, Couva. The showcase begins tomorrow and will last until Divali.
