7 sex charges: man denied bail

By Nikita Braxton-Benjamin

MITRA BALCHAN was denied bail yesterday on charges of rape and buggery of a girl. Balchan, 32, of South Oropouche, faced seven charges before San Fernando Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington in the San Fernando First Magistrates’ Court.
Five of the charges were that on dates unknown, between September and August, at Victoria Village, Cross Crossing, he had sexual intercourse with a female who was not his wife and who was under the age of 14 years.
All the charges were laid indictably.
At the end of the matter, Balchan, who was unrepresented, was told that he will be remanded in prison custody.
“In light of the multiple charges, I’m not going to fix bail...bail is refused, sir,” Wellington said.
Balchan was advised of his right to apply to a judge for bail.
The matter was adjourned to October 1.
