700 invited to highway opening

AFTER years of promises, protests, and consultation, the first phase of Solomon Hochoy Highway extension to Point Fortin will officially be ready for use tomorrow.
And to mark the historic occasion, a grand opening ceremony is being planned with a guest list of high ranking officials from this country and Brazil.
The guest list for the ceremony has crossed over 700 the Express was told. Residents in the constituencies of Fyzabad , Siparia, Oropouche East and Oropouche West were also invited to join in the celebrations.
The public can expect a heavy army and police presence at the Golconda Intersection site where the ceremony will take place starting at 2.30 p.m.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is expected to deliver the feature address. The construction of the highway was a promise made to the nation by the People's Partnership government during the election campaign of 2010.
The Golconda to Point Fortin Highway Project comprises of approximately 47 kilometre of four-lane highway and 2.5 km of two lane highways. The contract is being undertaken by Brazilian company Construtora OAS S.A, with AECOM as the supervising Consultant and the National Infrastructure Development Company (Nidco) as the employer for the project.
Design and construction works began in March 2011 and the contract schedule completion date is March 2015. Halcrow Ltd is undertaking the engineering and designs.
The extension of the highway consists of four phases. Construction in the first two phases has begun and design works for the other two are in progress.
The ceremony will be broadcast live on television.
