'Point', San Juan unchanged, San Fernando continues

By Aabida Allaham

THE ELECTIONS and Boundaries Commission (EBC) yesterday completed recounts in two electoral districts.

One other electoral district will be completed today.

In Cap-de-Ville under the Borough of Point Fortin and San Juan West under the Regional Corporation of San Juan/Laventille, the results remained the same.

In Springvale under the City of San Fernando, the recount requested by defeated People's National Movement (PNM) candidate, Kimberly Nikita McCollin who received 1235 votes, 43 less than John Mark Chankersingh from the United National Congress (UNC) will continue today.

In Cap-de-Ville, Paul Sean Bharat from the PNM requested the recount after preliminary results stated that he lost by eight votes giving Marilyn Ramnarinesingh the district. She got 577 votes.

In San Juan West, UNC candidate Randy Mario Callender managed to get 1544, but it was not enough to win.

The PNM's Kwesi Junior Antoine took it home with 1603. The new tally showed Callender received 1541 votes.

On the other hand, even with claims that there was a low turnout at the polls, the EBC is recording a .7 per cent voter increase.

In a telephone interview with the Express yesterday, communications manager Leslie Fitzpatrick said while voter turnout for local government election still continue to be low, when compared with the percentage turnout from 2003, which recorded a 38 per cent voter turnout, this year more people turned up at the polls.

"It's not a significant increase, but it's an increase," he said.

This year, 998,787 people were registered to vote in Monday's local government election, but only 386,830 used that right.
