UNC takes final seat in Sando recount

By Keino Swamber South Bureau

PASTOR John Mark Chankersingh yesterday became the final candidate in Monday's Local Government election to be officially declared winner of his electoral district.

Representing the United National Congress (UNC) in the People's Partnership, Chankersingh's victory was challenged by his People's National Movement (PNM) opponent, Kimberly McCollin.

A recount for the Springvale/Paradise electoral district was requested. The process started at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday and was completed at around noon yesterday, at Palm's Club, Pointe-a-Pierre Road, San Fernando.

Chankersingh was initially declared the winner on Monday night with 1,278 votes, compared to McCollin's 1,235. However, Chankersingh lost two votes during the recount as two of the ballots were deemed to be spoilt. He told the Express yesterday he is now ready to get down to work.

"There are short and long-term goals. The long-term goals will work along the lines of the manifesto of the party," Chankersingh said.

"Part of the plans would include addressing the issue of the waterfront, and we want to work closely with the business community to revive High Street. I would like to revisit the parking situation, taxi stands and the flow of traffic to make it more efficient."

Chankersingh said part of the plan to deal with the flow of traffic could include the opening up of Short Street to enable easy access to motorists between High Street and Pointe-a-Pierre Road. Also to receive attention is the issue of street vending and improved facilities for vendors at the San Fernando Fish Market.
