Abandoned newborn given clean bill of health

By Camille Bethel

The newborn baby girl who was abandoned outside St Mary's Children's Home in Tacarigua over the weekend has been given a clean bill of health, but remains in the care of the state.

The baby was found on Sunday night by security guards, who heard her screams outside the gate at the orphanage, and was taken to Wendy Fitzwilliam Paediatric Hospital at Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where medical tests were carried out.

Police sources said up to press time no one had turned up to claim the baby girl so she remains on the paediatric ward at the hospital.

The police are continuing investigations in an attempt to find the mother of the baby girl who was believed to have been just two hours old when she was found wrapped in an old T-shirt, with the umbilical cord still attached and ants crawling on her.
