A MAN on gun and ammunition charges will appear before the court today charged with escaping lawful custody, assaulting two police officers and maliciously damaging a watch belonging to an officer.
At around 10 a.m. on Monday, outside the Siparia Magistrates’ Court, the suspect allegedly escaped custody after he was placed in the prisoners’ van.
The suspect, of Pleasantville, had earlier faced Senior Magistrate Joanne Connor on a 2012 charge of possession of arms and ammunition in South Oropouche.
Connor had remanded the man in prison custody until next month.
In the van, the suspect, who was handcuffed to another prisoner, allegedly slipped out of the restraints.
To escape from the vehicle, he allegedly kicked a police officer who fell to the ground and suffered an injury to his right hand.
Reports are the escapee ran and was chased by police officers along High Street, Siparia.
There was a struggle between him and officers before his arrest.
