Alderman passes away
ALDERMAN in the Siparia Regional Corporation, Rampersad Mahabir has passed away.
Mahabir died from a heart attack at his Avocat, Fyzabad home yesterday.
Transport Minister Chandresh Sharma who had known Mahabir for many years, yesterday described him as a "tremendous community person". He said Mahabir, 61, an Alderman for two years, was always involved in sport and religious events in the community and was also active in charity and social work.
Mahabir, Sharma said, had taken part in recently held Eid-ul-Fitr and Independence Day celebrations. Sharma said Mahabir was once an accountant with Local Government and up until his death had been working in the Unemployment Relief Programme (URP).
He said Mahabir was an active sportsman who never complained of any ailments.
The businessman, was married to Lystra Mahabir and was the father of Allan Mahabir and Nadine Mahabir-Rooks. He had four grandchildren.
