American among 20 held for drunk driving

TWENTY people, including a Florida national, appeared in Siparia Magistrates' Court this week charged with driving under the influence of alcohol over the weekend.

They were arrested during exercises conducted by South Western Division police officers.

The persons charged were mostly teenagers and three were students of the University of the West Indies (UWI), police said.

They appeared before Magistrate Adia Mohammed on Monday and Wednesday.

The three UWI students were reprimanded and discharged, while the others were fined sums ranging from $1,500 to $2,000.

The exercises were conducted from December 29 to January 1 in the Penal, Erin and Siparia districts during the hours of 4-8 p.m

The main areas targeted were Quinam Beach Road and Los Iros Beach Road.

The exercises were spearheaded by Superintendent Franklyn Sampath, ASP Pardassie, Sgt Ramsundar and Sgt Gosine.—Sue-Ann Wayow
