Sport Minister Anil Roberts has started 2014 as a married man as he said “I do” yesterday to his love Shandell Nicholls.
The wedding took place at the Landings in St Lucia resort in an intimate ceremony attended by close friends and family.
Olympic medallist George Bovell III, who was also the Express Individual of the Year 2013, was Roberts’ best man.
Roberts told the Express that he was happy to be sharing his life with a woman he adored.
He said he got engaged to Nicholls earlier this year in St Lucia when they went to watch Dwayne Bravo and the West Indies cricket team play two one-day international matches on the island.
The wedding, he said, was originally planned for July 20, 2014 but as time went by Nicholls wanted the moment to come faster and to have a smaller ceremony.
On Christmas Day, torrential rains wreaked havoc on the islands of St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Roberts said that people were saying that the wedding should be cancelled because of the disaster but they chose not to because the side of the island where the wedding took place was not badly affected and staging his wedding day would actually help in the recovery process.
He added that he and his bride had dinner with St Lucia’s Minister of Infrastructure “and he expressed his deepest gratitude for not cancelling the wedding despite the difficulties the country is going through”.
Roberts was the fifth minister in the People’s Partnership Government to get married last year.
Minister in the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure Stacy Roopnarine was the first minister in the government to get married, exchanging vows with Damian Lyder in August 2012.
Food Production Minister Devant Maharaj married his long time love Kristal Ramroopsingh in June last year.
Also in June, Minister of National Diversity and Social Integration Embau Moheni tied the knot with Tempu Nefertari.
Minister of the People and Social Development Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh married businesswoman Arlene Maharaj in August 2013.
Wedding bells also rang for Minister in the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources Ramona Ramdial who tied the knot with Devindra Barrath in October.
United National Congress (UNC) chairman Khadija Ameen got engaged to Mitra Rampersad last July during the heat of the local government elections.
