Baby to be put for adoption

12-year-old rape victim pregnant

THE FAMILY of the 12-year-old girl who became pregnant after she was raped by her sister’s ex-boyfriend is considering placing the baby for adoption even as a warrant has been issued for the arrest of the child’s alleged attacker.
A relative yesterday told the Express that the girl who is five months pregnant and was due to write the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) examinations this year, is not ready for motherhood.
The female relative also said that adoption was being considered as an option as the 12-year-old child’s mother is a single parent who will have difficulty financially supporting the new-born.
The girl’s mother cares for four of her children including the 12-year-old standard five pupil.
It was last year that the 12-year-old girl’s sister who has a baby with the man from whom she since separated, was invited by the 25-year-old man to spend the weekend with him at his house.
The 12-year-old girl was asked by her older sister to accompany her and the child agreed.
While the sister and her baby were asleep, a police report said, the man raped the girl.
She was threatened that she will be killed should she tell anyone of the assault. The man also told her that she will be thrown out of her mother’s house should her mother be informed.
The girl kept the incident a secret.
But when her features began changing and earlier this month she started feeling unwell, her mother took her to the doctor who confirmed the child was pregnant.
The girl, when questioned by her mother, told her she was raped.
A district medical officer examined the girl and the mother was informed that her daughter had been assaulted.
The rape was reported to police on January 9.
Last week relatives complained to the Express that they were not satisfied with officers’ response. They claimed the man was not questioned by the police.
Yesterday a senior police officer told the Express that a warrant had been issued for the man’s arrest. Officers believe he has gone into hiding.
