By Elizabeth Williams Tobago Bureau

A Barbadian boat captain was on Monday fined $5,000 for fishing illegally in Tobago waters.

Ricardo Elliott, 37, pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Michael Brooms at the Scarborough Magistrate's First Court.

He was represented by defence attorney Joy Phillips.

Elliot was allowed until July 27 to pay the fine or, in default, serve four months' hard labour.

Acting Police Corporal Larry Daniel laid the charges.

According to public relations officer of the Coast Guard, Lt Kirk Jean Baptiste, Elliott and another fisherman were observed fishing in Tobago waters last Thursday.

When their vessel, Pride and Joy, was stopped and searched, a dolphin and 14 flying fish were found.

The catch was confiscated and will be distributed to a charitable organisation in Tobago.
