A MAN who was shot by police but escaped capture after carrying out a robbery in Belmont was found dead hours later in a cemetery in the area on Friday evening.

He has since been identified by police as Jerome West of Mackai Lands, Belmont, one of the men who police said were responsible for robbing three people at Tanner’s Guest House at Erthing Road, of cellular phones, cash and other valuables earlier in the day.

According to police, at around 2.30 p.m., officers of the Belmont Police Station received a report of the guest house being robbed by two armed men.

When officers arrived at the scene the men had already fled. However, while on mobile patrol, the officers spotted two men brandishing firearms and running along the roadway.

Police said West began firing at them, resulting in the officers returning fire. Police said West, dropped a black Glock pistol and escaped.

Around 5.45 p.m. Belmont police again received an anonymous phone call informing them of the body of a man lying in the cemetery along Phelham Street.

The dead man was identified as West. After searching West’s pants pockets, police said they found some of the valuables that were taken during the robbery.
