Birju back in court: fraud charge

FORMER Airports Authority general manager Dayanand Birju yesterday appeared before an Arima magistrate charged with fraud.
Birju who is currently on $200,000 bail appeared before Senior Magistrate Indrani Cedeno at the Arima First Magistrates’ Court.
Yesterday marked Birju’s first appearance at the Arima Magistrates’ Court after the matter was transferred from the Port of Spain Magistrates’ Court earlier this month.
On May 12, Birju appeared before Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar in the Port of Spain Eighth Court. He was represented by attorney Rosario Sookdeo.
The charge against Birju read that on August 8, 2012 at Piarco, he uttered a forged document stating he had a BSc degree in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts Boston in the USA which he obtained on May 26, 1988, in the name of Dayanand Birju, knowing it to be false and with the intent to defraud.
The allegation was first reported exclusively in the Sunday Express.
The matter has been adjourned to August 21.
