THE son of a church leader was shot dead by thieves who robbed four men liming near a village parlour on Sunday afternoon.
Eugene Brown, 34, was shot four times in the chest and abdomen. He collapsed near the roadway and died.
Brown was the son of Patrick Brown, bishop of the St Ann's Church of the Spiritual Metaphysics, at McBean Road Extension, Couva. Brown, a mason, lived with his family in a house adjoining the church.
Police said Brown was playing cards with three friends at Grant Street Extension, Calcutta No. 3., McBean, Couva when three armed men entered around 5 p.m. The four were robbed of cash and jewelry.
Police said one of the gunmen placed a gun at Brown's head and the two struggled. The suspect fired four shots before running out of the compound.
Brown's father said: "We were in church when we got a call that my son was shot. We rushed over there, but he was dead on the ground. I don't know what happened. But he got four bullets and died on the spot. He was a good man, a favourite in the area."
Brown's wife, 24-year-old Kia Hodge, said she was at home with their two children, an 18-month-old boy and four-month-old girl, when she heard he was shot. "He told me he was going down the road to come back," she said before breaking down in tears.
A female relative said: "He was a loving, caring man. He was a good father and provided for his family well. He was just at the wrong place. He was never involved in anything. I can't understand the state of this country now. Everyday someone is being murdered, raped, robbed. It can happen to any of us."
Senior Superintendent Deodath Dulalchan and a party of officers from Couva Police Station and Central Division Task Force visited the scene. A manhunt was launched for the suspects, but up to last evening no-one was arrested.
Corporal Radhay Kissoon is investigating.
