Bmobile joins drive to restore Cathedral
Archbishop Joseph Harris has appealed to the public to help raise $50 million needed to restore the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Port of Spain.
Joseph made the appeal during the media launch of a text-to-rebuild promotion at Archbishop’s House, 27 Maraval Road, Port of Spain. The text-to-rebuild campaign is the first phase of an awareness drive in conjunction with the archdiocese of Port of Spain and Bmobile to help raise funds for the restoration of the Cathedral. Starting this weekend, Bmobile prepaid and postpaid customers can text 2SAVE(27283) to donate $500; 2GIVE (24483) to donate $100 and 2HOPE(24673) to donate $100.
Joseph said the Cathedral is in need of urgent restoration. The lack of respect for the Cathedral, Joseph said, reflects what is happening with society.
“The Cathedral is in need of urgent repair. Once the Cathedral is restored the rest of society will be restored. It must be seen as very important because I believe that there is a relationship between the respect that we have for our sacred spaces and the respect that we have for each other.”
Chairman of the Archbishop’s Appeal, Joanne Miller said a 2011 dilapidation survey highlighted shocking revelations on the state of the Cathedral, with restoration works estimated at $70 million.
Bmobile Acting Vice President, Nicole Kerry Lum-Kin said Bmobile anticipates great success. The initiative is expected to continue until November and may continue again in the New Year.
