Body found floating off Pier 1 jetty

POLICE are seeking the public's assistance in identifying the body of a man which was found floating off the Pier 1 jetty, Williams Bay, Chaguaramas, yesterday.

According to police the man, of East Indian descent, is believed to be between 55 and 60 years old, and has a tattoo of a cross in the centre of his chest.

He was clad in green three-quarter-length pants.

Sergeant Edgar Beard, who visited the scene and conducted enquiries along with WP Cpls Campbell and Cumberbatch and PC Beddeo, reported to his seniors that the body was discovered by a swimmer around 7.10 a.m.

The man reported that while in the water, he felt something like a human head and reported it to officers of the Chaguaramas Development Authority (CDA).

Another man who was at the beach, after getting instructions from CDA officials, pulled the body to shore.

District medical officer Dr Akimoto visited the scene and reported to officers that the body appeared to have been dead for at least eight hours prior to being found.

There were no marks of violence on the body and no one, up to the time of discovery, reported anyone missing.

PC Mollineau, of the St James Police Station, is leading investigations into the matter.
