By Carolyn Kissoon carolyn.kissoon@trinidadexpress.com

The body of a 61-year-old woman was found floating in a pond in Ste Madeleine yesterday and her family believes she committed suicide.

Betty Praimdass was travelling in a taxi to San Fernando when she asked the driver to stop at the Usine/Ste Madeleine pond along the Naparima/Mayaro Road around 9.30 am.

Her brother, Allan Praimdass, said, "She told the driver to stop because she wanted to vomit. He waited for 20 minutes and came out of the car to look for her. He saw her slippers near the pond and got scared. He came back up by us and told me what happened. I stopped a passing police van and told them. We came here and found the body."

She was fully dressed and there were no marks of violence, police said.

Praimdass, who was never married and had no children, lived at Borde Narve Village, near Princes Town.

The woman's relatives believes she committed suicide. "I didn't know she had this in her mind. I knew she always go to the supermarket around this time. So I was not worried. I don't know why she would want to do this. She was not suffering from anything and we had no arguments," Allan Praimdass said.

The body was removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James where and autopsy would be performed today.

San Fernando police are continuing investigations.
