MINISTER of National Security Jack Warner was booed Tuesday night in Marabella by several people in a crowd that turned out for the million-dollar final of the Hoop of Life Community Basketball League.
Warner, along with San Fernando West Member of Parliament Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan, attended the competition at the basketball court at Trainline.
The basketballers from Laventille swept the three-game finals series 2-0. They defeated the Marabella United team 66-57 on their home ground, despite a keen contest from the runners-up.
On Sunday, Laventille won the first match at St Barb's Basketball Court 88-71. The stars of the night were Laventille's Steven "Lighter" Lewis and Kurt "Coto" Christian, and Marabella United's Damian Caton. Lewis scored 26 points and Christian supported with 17.
Marabella United, in placing second, took prize money of $500,000.
Caton, the team's centre, scored 17 points in the action-packed game.
The Hoop of Life Community Basketball League was launched last June by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, as she unveiled a plan to tackle crime with sport among the nation's young people.
Persad-Bissessar and Warner launched the programme with former National Basketball Association (NBA) star player Shaquille O'Neal.
