He says there were racial slurs appearing during the voting...

United States-based channel MTV yesterday announced a tie between Trinidadian soca artiste Bunji Garlin’s track “Differentology” and Korean rapper G-Dragon’s “Crooked”, for the MTV 2013 IGGY Song of the Year award just after noon when voting closed.

On his Facebook page yesterday, Garlin (Ian Alvarez) thanked his fans in a statement: “I would like to humbly thank everyone in Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean and elsewhere in the world for the time you spent voting your hearts and fingerprints out for the MTViggy song of the year.”

But he also complained that there were racial slurs appearing on social media sites during the voting.

“Sadly it has taken an unexpected turn for the worst. I was deeply saddened to see racial slurs flying around back and forth on social sites and I need to declare that I am in no way at all in support of that in any volume. We people of the Caribbean are the embodiment of variants and colours and as such let the world learn from that. I DO NOT stand for racism and will make damn sure it doesn’t represent me. Not all people are good but not all are bad either. You cannot be a fan or supporter of me and want to be a part of hurting humanity be it verbal, physical or mental. Let the record show on this day 21 of December 2013, I absolutely oppose the promotion of racism in any design especially from my corner. If someone else sees it fit for them to do it doesn’t mean the recipe is doing it back to them. What is done is done it is time we move on and grow and share goodness in this world to whom and where we can.” he said.

It was signed “Yours truly Ian                           Antonio Alvarez — The Viking of                     Soca.”

The announcement of his tie for the MTV award was made following an exhilarating two-and-a-half days of voting by Bunji Garlin fans.

Initially, Bunji was way ahead of G-Dragon with 86.56 per cent of the votes while the Korean rapper had just 13.44 per cent.

However, following complaints by fans, including local ones, via social media that they were blocked from casting votes, on Friday evening MTV announced an extension in voting to yesterday at midday.

“In the interest of genuine fairness and in consideration of the overwhelming support on both sides we have decided to extend the poll for a full 24 hours to account for time differences. The poll will now close at 11 a.m. EST December 21. This is a final amendment. If the poll crashes or there are any technical difficulties, it will be declared a draw,” MTV stated.

According to MTV, they worked as hard as they could to fix the problem but the magnitude of the votes was too much for the server to handle.

“After a staff discussion, we only thought it would be fair to give the fans a little bit more time. You now have until 5 p.m. EST this evening (12/20/13) to choose just between Bunji Garlin’s “Differentology” and G-Dragon’s “Crooked” for MTV Iggy Song of the Year,” the MTV site stated.
