COP: No justification for abuse of disabled man

Congress of the People (COP) political leader Prakash Ramadhar on Wednesday called for swift action to be taken against the two Special Reserve Police Officers (SRP) who abused a disabled man.

In a release, Ramadhar stated that the COP vehemently condemns the behaviour of two police officers recorded in a video which has appeared in both the social and electronic media.

In the video the officers are seen, in separate actions, physically and verbally assaulting a disabled man, Robbie Ramcharitar, in a wheelchair on the streets of San Fernando.

“There is no circumstance in which this kind of behaviour by police officers against a civilian, particularly a disabled person, can be justified. This behaviour must be roundly condemned,” said Ramadhar.

“The investigations into this incident by the Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Police Complaints Authority need to be completed urgently and any appropriate action taken in the shortest time possible. Members of the public who may have witnessed the incident first hand must come forward and assist these investigations,” he added.

Ramadhar stated that the situation was ironic because the police have been striving to improve relations with the public without whom crime-fighting efforts will not be successful.

He said this incident is completely counter to those efforts.

“The relations between the police and the public must not be allowed to be negatively affected because of such inappropriate actions by any police officer,” said Ramadhar.

It has since been announced by the Acting Commissioner of Police that the SRP officers in question had been issued notifications to cease their duties, pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident.
