COP man hits non-selection

Congress of the People (COP) member Victor Lall is protesting the party’s decison to chose another candidate over him, in the upcoming local government elections.
Lall, 56, was not chosen to represent the COP in the Marabella West district. Incumbent councillor Gloria Calliste was selected.
Lall, an electrician, said many persons in his area preferred him to be their new councillor.
Lall, who lives at Bayshore, Marabella, met with some of his supporters in the area last Friday.
He said: “My main problem is that I was told by office members and other party branch members that I was the potential one for the selection.”
Lall said he was screened at the COP’s office in San Fernando just over two weeks ago by COP’s chairman Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan and other members of the San Fernando COP executive.
He was first told that he was not selected by “ordinary people” and a week after the screening, a board member called him and informed him of the decision to choose Calliste instead of him.
But Lall says he is “far better” candidate than Calliste and was trying everything he could to be selected.
Calliste in response to Lall’s statements said: “I have served and I have delivered. What I did in my area, no councillor ever did that. The people spoke. They wanted me to go back.”
She said her campaign so far has been “going good” and she had a lot of support, except from Lall.
