COP now supports ‘fair’ tax
The Congress of the People (COP) has taken out a full-page advertisement to emphasise its position that it is against the property tax proposed under the People’s National Movement (PNM) administration.
The advertisement, entitled “Clarifying our position on property tax”, stated the COP believes citizens should be fairly taxed for land/building assets.
“In 2009, we did not support the property tax structure based on present-day valuations proposed by the Manning-
led PNM Government. It was abolished after COP’s strong axe the tax campaign,” stated the ad.
“The COP believes that any such taxation should involve consultation and should not be a hardship for people to afford,” the ad stated.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, following the budget pre-
sentation on Monday, stressed there will not be a return of property tax as proposed by the PNM.
She said there will be a tax on industrial property.
With respect to residential and agricultural lands, the Prime Minister said the old land and building taxes will return and be applied.
