COP takes 'first step' in Tobago

By Elizabeth Williams Tobago Bureau

There is a new executive in place for the Congress of the People (COP) in Tobago.

On Saturday the party held executive elections, and six persons are now leading the group. They include chairman Jonathan Stone, deputy chairman Yerklyn Thomas, and public relations officer Roselle Andrews.

Stone said the new executive intends to establish roots in Tobago, working in the best interest of the people.

"So the COP has taken its first step, in reviving the COP in Tobago, by doing what the constitution of the Congress of the People says, put a Tobago Council in place, and they have done that today with the new chairman," Stone said.

Stone added, the COP will be embarking on a vigorous campaign to regain close to 600 members, and establish an office in Tobago. The new political leader of the party will be given a new mandate.

"Any political leader that is elected, we are going to mandate that political leader to come to Tobago as often as possible, not limited to twice a month, but no less than twice a month. Come here, walk with us, let's go through Charlotteville together, let's go to the service of Bethel together," Stone said.

The new chairman stressed that the party is open to all Tobagonians.

As for the 2013 general election and whether the COP will be contesting as a separate party or united with the Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP), Stone said, after talks and a series of meetings are conducted, a way forward on this matter will be made.
